Fieldbus Connectors

The ERbic line of universal bus interface connector systems is versatile, compact and easy to service.

It is available for CAN-Bus, Profibus, Profibus Ex i and SafetyBUS p. This versatile bus interface system features an integral metal strain relief i a backshell,k that is built around the 9-pin D-Subminiature connector-making this a compact bus interface connector system.

The ERbic features colour-couded plastic backshell housing and the molded-in bus configuration name. For easy installation the connectors colour-coded backshell housing also distinguishes between the specific bus node and termination versions.

Profibus

Profibus is the most widely used field bus. It is promoted by Siemens and by organized, interested and committed manufacturers and users in the PNO (Profibus user organization). The IP 20 interface on the device side is standardized as a 9-pin D-Sub female connector. The max. data transmission rate is 12 Mbit/s. The cable is a shielded twisted pair conductor.

The cable sheath is violet and the signal cores are green (A) and red (B).

With its comprehensive program, ERNI provides customers with a wide variety of options. Particular emphasis should be placed on the different termination technologies, from the traditional screw terminal to the cage clamp terminal to the IDC terminal.

Profibus Ex i

There is a special Profibus specification for safety-orientated intrinsically safe applications. Intrinsic safety is achieved by limiting the energy. At low voltage, this is reflected, among other things, by a higher current density in the bus line, as the devices are also supplied with power via the bus line.

With regard to the connector, the main factor is compliance with EN 50020. For example, defined clearance and creepage distances and current carrying capacity must be taken into account. The Profibus Ex i connectors has been developed in cooperation with ABB and approved for their S900 controller.

The individual connector alone does not require separate approval. This must always be given in conjunction with the system in accordance with the relevant directives and standards.

CAN-Bus

The CAN bus, originally developed for automobile engine management, is distinguished by its particularly high reliability. Among other things, this necessitates a more complicated protocol, which leads to lower data rates and cable lengths.

This can be compensated for in part by larger cable cross sections. Data rates reach 1 Mbit/s. The 9-pin D-Sub connector is standardized as the interface to the device.

In some cases, a version with a shield coupling capacitor is available as an option (cable shield <-> housing D-Sub).

SafetyBUS p

The SafetyBus p utilizes the advantages of the CAN bus. A protocol has been developed by Pilz that satisfies safety engineering requirements.

A larger cable cross section of 0.75 mm2 is specified to cover longer distances. Only the 3 conductors necessary for the bus are terminated within the connector (HLG).

ERbic MAX CAN Switch

The ERbic® MAX CAN Switch designates the Metal version with AXial cable outlet. A special feature of this new bus interface connector is the robust diecast metal housing, making it ideal for applications in rough environments, where EMC requirements are strict.

The axial cable outlet on the ERbic MAX CAN is positioned in the mating direction. This achieves a narrow, space-saving, slimline form, as is required in applications where two fieldbus interfaces need to be on top of each other. The print terminals with screw terminations allow for CAN bus cables with sizes from 0.14 mm2 (AGW34) up to 1.0 mm2 (AWG 18) with a cable diameter of maximum 8.0 mm.

The ERbic MAX CAN Switch includes an integrated external switch by means of which the termination can be switched on or off. When a CAN network is extended, the ERbic, in which termination is active, can simply be switched to the node version without termination. For purposes of error diagnostics at a particular bus device it is possible to terminate the bus, and to decouple the following device. This switch is recessed from the outline of the housing, protecting it against accidental operation.

Profibus IDC Switch

The IDC terminals allow for quick and easy connection of discrete Profibus wires without pre-stripping the wire insulation. Furthermore, tooling is not required to operate the IDC terminal block.

The Profibus IDC switch includes an integrated switch that allows for flexible system design and easy system extension. The external switch, which is recessed and therefore protected from accidental interruption, operates the termination resistor.

In a network extension, the appropriate active termination connector may easily be switched to a node connector without terminating the system. Additionally, while trouble shooting the network, the appropriate node connector can be terminated and separated from adjacent network participants. This allows the remaining system to continue operation without disruption.

MAX Profibus IDC Switch

The ERbic MAX Profibus IDC Switch includes an integrated switch by means of which the termination can be switched on or off. When a Profibus network is extended, the ERbic, in which termination is active, can simply be switched to the node version without termination.

For purposes of error diagnostics at a particular bus device it is possible to terminate the bus, and to decouple the following device. This switch is recessed from the outline of the housing, protecting it against accidental operation. The integrated SM inductors in the ERbic MAX Profibus IDC Switch makes it generally usable for data rates up to 12 Mbit/s.

The ERbic line from ERNI provides a universal range of interface connectors through which reliable, compact automation solutions can easily be implemented. Versions for common bus systems such as , CAN-Bus, Safetybus and Profibus up to 12 Mbit/s are available.

Reversed Versions

The new reversed versions are part of the ERbic product range. The ERbic is a bus interface connector system for Profibus, CAN-Bus, Interbus-S and Bitbus.

The new reversed version has the D-Sub turned by 180°. That means the cable entry is to the opposite side as for the standard version. The ERbic reversed types are ideal for mounting conditions like on IPCs which does not allow the use of the standard type.
